6TH CENTURY - CURRENT DAY

Bicester has a history going back to Saxon times (6th Century). The name Bicester, which has been in use since the mid seventeenth century, derives from earlier forms including Berncestre, Bucester, Biciter and Bissiter.

Theories advanced for the meaning of of the name include "of Beorna" (personal name), "The Fort of the Warriors" or literally from Latin Bi-cester to mean "The 2 Forts".

The oldest part of Bicester is where the King's End estate currently lies. This is where a North-South Roman route used to run.
